Character interview with a necromancer

Surfing the net recently, I came across this really neat idea of character interviews. So today I’m going to introduce you to Amber, the lead female character in A Job From Hell.

Q. Amber, you recently turned eighteen and won the gift of talking to the dead in a paranormal race. So, I guess you’re a necromancer now. Is that something you’ve always wanted to be?

A. Oh, gosh, no. The dead, both the dead-as-a-nail-coffin and the walking-among-us dead, kinda give me the creeps so I’d rather not deal with them day in, day out. I remember the first time I saw a ghost. I was sitting in a pub in Inverness, Scotland, facing this lady in black at the bar. Only, her head was tilted to the side in an unnatural angle. I seriously thought she was an actress. And then I started to see more and more ghosts, walking down the street, following me in the woods. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night with a cold sensation creeping up your arms or seeing your boyfriend’s ex spread all over the bed, dead as a stone with a gashing wound on her neck. That one still gives me nightmares.

Q. But even after finding out you were a necromancer living in a house full of vampires, you still didn’t leave Scotland.

A. Trust me, I tried. I wanted to run but I didn’t get very far. The moment I left Aidan’s property, I was almost kidnapped by a bunch of creepy black-eyed warriors called Shadows who wanted my ability. I managed to escape and stayed with Aidan, thinking I was better off with a vampire than with the Shadows’ child queen aka the Exorcist kid. How could I have known my new crush, Aidan, had his own motives to keep me close to him? It took me a while to realize he wasn’t my hero, and I was a trusting pawn. I was naïve and in love, and stayed for hope.

Q. Your friend, Lucifer’s daughter, Cass, ends up playing a big role in your future, but she reminds me a bit of Carrie in Sex and the City. How on earth did you two become friends, and is she really such a ‘scatter-brain’?

A. I think she is. Starting with her way of dressing in the most garish outfits ever, to her strange reasoning or inability to focus on a thought for longer than a few seconds, there’s always something about Cass that isn’t ‘normal’, but her nerdiness adds to her charm. Cass is quite complex, caring and fiercely protective of her friends, which I admire about her. But she can also be quite shallow and manipulative at times, and I don’t know if she would really swap her life as a fallen angel for being normal. We became friends because she was brutally honest with me when she revealed Aidan’s identity. I like people like her.

Q. Early on in your story, I could sense a certain frailty in you. Was it the strange circumstances and occurrences in Scotland or meeting Aidan that changed your life?

A. A bit of both, actually. Moving away from your friends and family into a deserted mansion in the middle of nowhere isn’t easy. And then falling for the hot employer who’s supposed to be off limits when strange things start to happen all around you, let’s just say, I wanted to stay away from him, but he wouldn’t let me. Suddenly finding myself trapped in Aidan’s paranormal world helped me discover my true self and gain confidence along the way.

Q. You’re not just a necromancer; you’re something else that you said you’d rather not reveal. Where do you see yourself in the future?

A. For a long time, I wanted my old life back. But I’ve realized I can’t have it, so I’m making the best of my new circumstances. I want to help others in my position, which is why I’ve decided to put my new ability to good use and turn it into a business venture.

Q. And lastly, how would you summarize your story?

A. It’s the story of a young woman guided by fate, who would do anything to save the man she loves. A story of love and betrayal, of hidden motives and an ancient war between two races in which she will always be a pawn.

Voodoo Kiss Official Launch

Hey everyone,

I'm absolutely thrilled to announce that Voodoo Kiss is finally available in all eBook stores. I had a blast researching and writing this book. What with me being superstitious and all, I was excited but also scared while diving deep into the world of Voodoo, but now I actually think it's kinda cool. As long as the priestess doesn't use anything foul smelling, like blood and what else not, I can keep it together and ignore the creepy feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Anyway, I'd like to thank my readers for the support. If it weren't for you and the expressed interest in reading another book in the Ancient Legends series, Voodoo Kiss would probably not exist. I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Voodoo Kiss playlist - Chocolate and more...

Voodoo Kiss (Ancient Legends Book 3)

Aspiring rock star Sofia had it all planned. Or so she thought until her sister's sacrificed in a horrific ritual. On a trip to Brazil, something awakens inside Sofia -- her legacy, a blessing and a curse, drawing to her every paranormal creature out there: vampires, demons and reapers, ghosts and Shadows, and something much darker that's been twisting its way into her heart and soul.

In a world of love and betrayal, of reincarnation and ancient bonds, to solve the mystery of her sister's murder, Sofia must embrace her own century-old legacy even if it means sure death…

With Voodoo Kiss hitting all ebook stores in just a few days I thought I'd post a link to some of the songs that inspired most of the book. You can watch the videos below or go to Youtube.com.

To bring her separated parents together again Emily opens a portal to Black Wood. And so Emily's long, dangerous fight against the evil Muriel begins.
Surely witches, trolls, nymphs and silverfurs are figments of imagination? Emily Jones thinks that until she moves into Ravencourt manor, her deceased grandmother's manor. Its just as creepy and scary as she remembered it.

Will Emily learn to use her grandmother's legacy before Muriel unleashes her powers upon the world?

Meet the Artist

As you know the digital art for Doomed was designed by the amazingly talented Shiela Oliveros. Today I'd like to share a few details about Shiela:

- she's 25 (only!!!)
- she's always wanted to be an artist because ever since she was a child that's where she found her passion.
- she's actually self taught and further enhanced her talent when she went to college, at University of Santo Tomas in Manila & took up Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Painting.
- she draws inspiration from other artists - it doesn't matter if they are popular or not, as long as they are talented & passionate about their work. Currently, she's working and developing her own technique and original characters (Laceys).
- she's constantly working for improvement so that she can inspire more artists to stand up for their passion & ready to face the field of art.
- Shiela charges $80+ for her artwork, which is a bargain in the publishing world.
- and, last but not least, Shiela's creating the album art of a Canadian band to be released anytime before December, I believe.

I believe she's going to be a huge star one day! You can c0ntact Shiela through her website:

Welcome to the Slaughter House interview

I was thrilled when one of my favourite writers of all times, Richard Godwin, asked whether I'd be interested in an interview. Naturally, I was honoured and scared at the same time, not least because Richard is such a talented writer (just have a look at his novel Apostle Rising to see what I'm talking about), who has a way with words I can only dream of.
Anyway, the interview's out and I love it! If interested, you can read it here:

A huge thank you to Richard Godwin, author of Apostle Rising, for the time and effort!

Writers and reputation: when writers review books

Every now and then I go through Goodreads ratings to check what readers have to say about my book and those of others. It was at such a time a few days ago that I noticed other writers leaving one- to three-star reviews and ratings for competitive indie titles. Having worked in PR for a few years, I was seriously shocked. Surely, as a writer one understands the magnitude of one's reputation and the impact it can have on one's career as well as the fact that the writers community is small and everyone knows everyone.

As a writer, reputation ranks almost as highly as skill and novelty. We would never find the likes of Stephenie Meyer and JK Rowling rating a fellow writer's work because it's not in their interest to alienate both fellow writers and their fanbase/followers, who are potential readers of one's own book. From a PR perspective, this is a huge no-no. In fact, traditionally published authors are often encouraged to endorse each other's books and so widen their markets and target audiences.

Indie or not, I suggest never to rate a writer's work below four stars. If you can't give it four stars, then don't leave a rating at all because leaving a trail on the Internet is forever and someone's bound to find out sooner or later and might not take kindly to it.

To all fellow authors out there, we're writers and not reviewers. What you may not like, others might end up loving, hence, it's not in your best interest to insult any reader's (or reviewers') taste and lose potential sales. Since you have your own style and expectations as to what fiction should read like, you're not unbiased. By leaving a low rating, you're not helping your reputation in the writing community either because people will start talking about you, and certainly not in glowing terms.

Sometimes silence is worth more than gold!

To your publishing success!

Please check out and help spread the word about my new novel, A JOB FROM HELL, available on Kindle and Smashwords, and soon in paperback.

The moment Amber starts her new summer job in Scotland and sets eyes upon Aidan, her fate is sealed. Summoned by an ancient bond, she can never love another.
Lost in the woods one night, Amber enters Aidan's deadly world by chance when she unknowingly participates in a paranormal race, and promptly wins the first prize - a prize worth killing for.
In a world of forbidden love, of ancient enemies, legends and rituals, nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted. Amber's life will never be the same again, unless she searches the Otherworld for what everyone wants. But to do so, Amber must die.

A JOB FROM HELL is the stunning first book in the paranormal series, Ancient Legends.

Thanks so much,

Seven reasons why you may decide not to self publish

Recently, a string of authors, including the big name Barry Eisler, have gone on to turn their backs on the traditional publishing route and self-publish, sparkling plenty of discussions and divided opinions in the author community. We don't know where publishing will be in two, five or ten years. All we know is that the publishing world is changing; with Kindle, Sony, Nook etc. more and more authors realise they can reach their target audience by going indie, without having to wait months and years on agents and publishers. While not everyone's Amanda Hocking, making millions in the process (I know I'm not, not sure about you!), it's not just about making money, but more about seeing one's work read and hopefully enjoyed by others.
Of course there's the stigma of publishing: that a book's not good enough to be picked up by a traditional publisher, that it might be riddled with grammar and spelling mistakes, etc., but like prejudice goes, it's usually based on a few bad examples rather than on the majority.
I call self-publishing 'author self-impowerment' because it gives authors full control over their book and whatever happens with it, such as what to write, how many books to write in a series and, my favourite activity of all times, cover design. Hence, I'm all for it if your book's gone through enough editing and you have given thought to the seven points raised below.

Read my favourite seven points to consider before you take the leap and self-publish:
  • you expect to make millions in the process. As said, most writers will never reach Amanda Hocking's status. This certainly applies to both self- and traditional publishing. Some make it, others don't. Unfortunately, that's the reality.
  • you're a recluse and don't enjoy human contact, not even the virtual one like social media. In that case, you're better off locking the manuscript away forever because in our world there's no way you won't have to communicate with fans and those yet to become at some point.
  • you're not prepared to listen to audience taste. You don't need to waste your time trying your hand at steampunk and YA vampire romances when you'd rather write futuristic thrillers, but it might be worth looking at some aspects of what is popular nowadays and find a way to bring your knowledge and research into your preferred genre to give it a modern or unique twist.
  • you have nothing unique to say. This one ties in with the point previously made. Readers are spoilt for choice. Since almost everything's been done already, if you can't come up with a new twist, your books might never really take off and find worldwide appeal.
  • you don't mind waiting. As in, you don't mind waiting to hear back from agents' assistants, agents, a publisher's editor, then the editor-in-chief. It could take years. Life's too short not to take your own future in your own hands. This doesn't mean you shouldn't try the traditional publishing route. But I've talked to authors who built a platform first and then were approached by agents/publishers rather than spend their valuable time trying to persuade someone else of how much potential their novels had.
  • you're not prepared to spend forty hours a week marketing your work. As much as I'd like to pretend otherwise, even traditionally published authors spend more time engaged in promotional activities than they spend on writing. So, learning about marketing and PR comes with the job, really.
  • you can't take criticism. And there's going to be lots of it in the form of bad reviews, comparing your work to those of others, etc. Writing a book is highly intimate. By putting your work out there, you make yourself vulnerable to others belittling your work, talent, and so forth. Don't forget it's a job. Customers pay for your novel, so they're entitled to say whatever they want. Of course, we all wish they could play nice and fair, but life doesn't always work like that. If you can't grow a thick skin, then you're better off never showing your work to anyone, not even to friends and family.
To your publishing success!

Writing without distractions

I don't know about you, but whenever I write I'm never quite able to switch off that tiny voice at the back of my mind reminding me of the countless other (often trivial) things I could be doing instead. And so I end up, taking 'breaks' during which I chat, compulsively check my eMails, surf Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc., which cuts into my productivity. Don't get me wrong, I adore writing, but the Internet is a fine and highly addictive invention even the best of us can't resist. Luckily, my search for ways to keep me from switching on my airport and checking Hotmail yet again has helped me find great software to aid a writer in resisting the near constant stream of virtual distraction. The software mentioned below is simple with the sole intention of providing a black screen so you can get on with your writing, and nothing else.

OMMwriter is a MAC program that simply takes over the entire monitor and furnishes a minimalistic, zen-like environment. This one's really helped me focus for several weeks now.

Dark Room is the Windows equivalent, running on Win 2000 through Vista. With its simple black screen, it's less chic than OMMwriter, but it does a great job at being about just you and your text.

Finally, there's RubyRoom with a few more additions. All three software programs come with word counters, but in RubyRoom the user can't switch it off, so if that feature's yet another distraction, then you're probably better off using one of the other options. You should also have basic Linux knowledge before diving into this one.

If you have any suggestions, please free to share your recommendations.

To your publishing success!

Note: I consciously decided not to mention any download links. The software mentioned above is available for free on the Internet. Before downloading .exe or .zip files always make sure your anti-virus software is up to date. Please scan the files before you install them. If in doubt, always back up any important files before installing anything downloaded from the Internet.

Review sites worth considering

Most authors, whether self- or traditionally published, will have to spread the word about their book at the beginning of their career. Searching the internet for review sites can take a long time. To save you time, I've put together a list with a few sites that should get you started and keep you busy for a few days. You won't be able to get your book featured in each and every one of those, but a few good reviews should spark some major interest in what you have to sell.

Mysteries:Poetry:Romance and women's fiction (including paranormal lit):Science fiction and fantasy:

Please do your research and read the fine print before submitting to any of these sites as I can't guarantee they're all free. To your publishing success!
